Hometown: Holyoke, Mass.

Derby number:

  3. Led Zeppelin – When the Levee Breaks
  4. Missy Elliott – Gossip Folks
  5. Arcade Five – Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)

On my perfect derby day, I would make every hit, kick tons of ass, have a burger at the after party and find a hot tub to sit in after.

This season, I will become the immovable rock I know I can be.

Discipline and Punisher’s Number 5? Backseat Trampoline

3 May

Name: Discipline and Punisher

Hometown: Dighton, Mass.

Teams: Florence Fightin’ Gals and WMDs

My top 5 reasons to drive with the top dow:

  1. Looking cool
  2. You are too tall for the top
  3. I have a giant bubble machine in the back
  4. The hot tub steams up the windows
  5. It’s easier to use the backseat trampoline

My idea of a perfect derby day is to play my heart out with my team.

This season, my goals are to communicate more clearly and to be a better skater.

Pink Panzer’s Top 5 Things Popular in the ’80s

26 Apr

Name: Pink Panzer

Hometown: Northampton, Mass.

Derby number: 88

Team: Quabbin Missile Crisis, WMDs

My top 5 things that were popular in the ’80s (in no particular order):

  1. Hats (esp. berets – I had, like, 20 of them!) (And I was totally a valley girl – sort of.)
  2. Milly Ringwald – Pretty much the reason why I started dying my hair…I mean, this is totally my natural color…
  3. Perms  (Oh – it was bad in the ’80s – bangs and everything)
  4. My denim jacket – it was acid washed, covered in pins and buttons and brooches, and I wore it off one shoulder.
  5. Madonna – even though I didn’t really dress like her, she was everything that was popular in the ’80s.

My idea of a perfect derby day is: getting to play a fun and challenging bout – hard work is rewarding when you get to see it come together with your teammates!

My goals for the season are: to not get hurt – injuries suck! Nothing broken, no tears (as in muscles and tendons) and to be the best teammate I can for my ladies!

My idea of a perfect derby day is to wake up (obviously), eat an awesome breakfast, do some trail skaing, grab some beer and watch derby with friends.

This season, my goals are to perfect quick cuts, staying upright, and stopping on a dime!

Lady Hulk’s Top Snacks, Dance Songs, and Home Bout Routine

12 Apr

Name: Lady Hulk
Hometown: Easthampton, Mass.
Derby number: 29
Teams:WMDs, Florence Fightin’ Gals

Top 5 Snacks:

  1. Go Berry
  2. Popcorn
  3. Ice cream (“purple cow” from Herrell’s)
  4. Chili mango slices from Trader Joe’s
  5. Peppermint Joe Joe’s

My Top 5 (but really two) Dance Songs:

  1. Edge of Glory
  2. Ditto
  3. Ditto
  4. Ditto
  5. Just Dance/Polker Face

My idea of a normal home bout day: Wake up excited and nervous. Eat breakfast—an egg sandwich. Go shopping for the bake sale [at the bout]. Go to the venue to set up the floor. Eat lunch. Think about napping while making bake sale cookies or washing fruit for fruit cups. Realize I am supposed to be at venue in half an hour. Panic. Run around house packing bag and finishing bake sale stuff. Drive quickly and sneak in, hoping no one noticed! Sell merch. Hit people. Have fun.

I love derby!

Wait for burger while tummy is growling. Eat Dance. Sleep.

Honorable Mention: Trick or Treat

I’ve already had a few magical derby days since starting with PVRD over a year ago. My favorite and most memorable day being my first bout on July 16th, 2011 in Northampton. There was a warm up jog with Blood Bath & Beyond and Celia Casket, excited pre-game snuggles with Donny Brook, a surprise birthday party for Dr. Spankenstein in the ladies locker room, and lots of hugs and kisses at the afterparty from someone special. :)

My goals for this season are: To be the best jammer I can be for both of my teams.

Clam’s Narragansett Tie Story

5 Oct 2011_01005_ClamGansett

At Thursday’s practice, Clam Jammer was spotted sporting a red and white “Official Beer of the Clam” Narragansett tie. The tie was a nice piece of neck wear, but the story of its acquisition was even sweeter.

The story of the tie goes a bit like this: on her way back from Rugged Maniac, Clam stopped at a festival in Greenfield, spotted a Narragansett table, and moseyed on over. Eying the ties on display, Clam asked the rep manning the booth if she could buy one. The ties weren’t for sale and couldn’t be had… until the rep realized that Clam was, well, Clam. Narragansett is a PVRD sponsor and he handed over one of the fabulous pieces of ‘Gansett gear. In return, Clam Jammer promised to pose with it, some friends, and their best Narragansett wear. Hence, the lovely “jam out with your clam out” shirts on display at practice.

Gnome Ercy #14

1 Sep

Gnome14

Age:  27

Hometown: Sunderland

PVRD teams: WMDs and Quabbin Missile Crisis

Gnome responds in symbols when asked what best represents the derby her: <O->-< (Turn your head sideways and you’ll get it.)

If left alone on a desert island, Gnome would go for a swim. Then nap.

Her favorite weapon of destruction is an iRobot 510 PackBot. (She also has a personal home robot named Stanley.)

Like Bazooka Joe, Gnome just cocks her head when someone asks her why she plays derby. Her answer? “Why not?”

Pink Panzer #88 (millimeter)

29 Aug

Panzer88

Age: 35

Hometown: Little Rock, Arkansas and Northampton, Mass.

PVRD teams: Co-Captain, WMDs, and Captain, Quabbin Missile Crisis

Isn’t it obvious what icon would best represent Pink Panzer? “Duh, a pink tank,” she says.

All Panzer’s fans want to know which came first, the hair or the name. (Panzer admits it’s the hair. It’s been pink more longer and more often than she’s been skating.)

Panzer says she should probably pick grenades or missiles or even Bazookas as her favorite weapon of destruction, but really her favorite weapons are her hips because “I’ve destroyed whole packs with them before.”

Panzer’s story of sports redemption goes a bit like this: She played soccer all of her life, but wasn’t into playing other sports…until she saw derby for the first time. Panzer decided that the sport looked awesome and decided to give it a shot herself. “And I loved it. Yeah!” she says
